The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unforeseen suffering for businesses and individuals alike, disrupting livelihoods, and affecting people's mental health. But amidst the chaos and suffering are also a few silver linings. One is the shift to remote work, with employees working from home and companies opting to hire more and more freelancers based in other cities or countries.
Many Fortune 500 companies engage in project-based hiring practices (i.e., hiring freelancers or contractors), allowing them to hire talent as needed for individual projects. Another advantage of remote, project-based hiring is that it can help address the tech talent gap, as a single specialist can work on projects for multiple companies simultaneously. This practice is particularly important as more and more baby boomers begin to retire since the economy could expect a drastic downward turn due to a shortage of youth to fill the newly vacant positions.
