Skillfactory: Why Programmers Are Unhappy

Evgeny Koltunovsky, Head of Test Automation at Selecty, shared his perspective on the unpredictable challenges that aspiring programmers often face early in their careers. According to him, IT work rarely delivers quick wins.
«Many problems can’t be solved on the fly” and tend to occupy your thoughts long after you’ve left your desk — sometimes for an entire day, without yielding the right answer. These unresolved issues have a way of snowballing, especially given the high business demand for rapid solutions».
Koltunovsky stresses that heavy technical debt, coupled with administrative and bureaucratic hurdles, can easily lead to burnout if not managed properly. He recommends putting a strong emphasis on planning tasks and workflows, engaging more with colleagues, and providing feedback. Equally important, he notes, is the ability to «switch off» from work in the evenings, stay physically active, spend time outdoors, and pursue hobbies that recharge your energy and mindset.
«Without finding a healthy balance between work and personal life, sustaining a long-term career in IT becomes nearly impossible. Eventually, the corporate machine will drain all your energy, making it harder to handle crises effectively. Koltunovsky advises developing personal “life hacks” to ease daily routines».
In his view, flexibility, adaptability, and creating one’s own productive work patterns enable IT professionals to boost efficiency, respond to challenges more effectively, and still carve out time for personal life.
