Gazeta.ru: How to Handle Criticism at Work

A recruiter’s job is inherently stressful. Interviews create tension for both candidates and hiring managers, leading them to sometimes «lash out» at the recruiter.
«I have a rather unique approach that I resort to in extreme cases when someone is being rude or making inappropriate comments. I start to focus on their face: their eyes, eyelashes, mouth, and teeth. I pay attention to the way they speak, the intonation of their voice, and I even ponder things like how they woke up that morning or what they ate for breakfast.

We frequently exaggerate the importance of those who criticize us, especially when it’s our superior. This method can induce a mild sense of derealization, lower stress and make the interaction feel less overwhelming».
Ekaterina shared another technique to quickly calm down. She, as an expert, uses it before meetings with key clients or management.

Ekaterina Bobokova, senior consultant at Selecty:
«I try to immerse myself in a meditative state: I sit down, close my eyes, and start breathing slowly and deeply, concentrating on the act. Even 60 seconds can make a difference, but it’s important to keep your mind clear, focusing on the sensation of fresh air flowing through your lungs and filling your body.

Gradually, chaotic thoughts become more organised, and my mind regains clarity and calmness. This is my personal secret to avoiding acting on impulse during negotiations».
